About the CDU
The Clinical Decision Unit (CDU) provides high-quality care to patients in the Emergency Department who need further management or diagnostic information to allow a decision regarding disposition. The CDU provides high value care, allowing rapid reassessment and treatment of acute medical conditions. We provide this in a setting that is efficient for health care providers and expedient for our patients
The CDU is a 15 bed extension of the Emergency Department. The CDU specializes in the care of patients in the Emergency Department who are likely to be able to be discharged without inpatient services, but need further management or diagnostic information. This management should be able to be accomplished in under 24 hours. CDU care will allow the team the time necessary to make a clinical decision on a patient's condition, need for treatment and in some cases, need for admission to the hospital. In addition to ED nursing and ancillary staff, care is provided by Advance Practice Providers (APPs) with direct oversight by an Emergency Physician. To maintain efficiency and quality, care is streamlined through the use of protocols. Patients must meet inclusion criteria for an established protocol to be considered appropriate for care in the CDU. In addition, there are both general and specific exclusion criteria established to meet our goal of safe, compassionate, high value care in the ED CDU.
