MRI / Nuc Med pathway
MRI / Nuc Med pathway
MRI or Nuclear Medicine is needed for a Binary Decision on Admit vs. Discharge
Main ED can clearly define aim of study and disposition point based on result
Study not readily available in the main ED (> 2 hour wait)
Cannot reasonably or safely be accomplished as an outpatient
Patient can tolerate study without anesthesia (single dose of Midazolam OK)
Cardiac Device needing EP / Device Rep Consultation prior to MR
Patient likely to need admission regardless of study result
Unstable vital signs
Patient requires admission regardless of posible results of study
Study is part of multi-step workup (e.g. MR > LP > Neuro Consult)
Coordinate with MR tech / Nuc Med and Nursing staff on timing to give patient expectations
Regular Diet, PRN orders
NPO only if needed for study (e.g. MRCP, HIDA)
If patient needs HIDA, No narcotic medications for 12 hours prior to study
Medications:
Midazolam 1 mg - 2 mg One Time PRN for anxiety or claustrophobia during study
Disposition
Result of study does not require further hospitalization (e.g. MR negative for MS flare, or VQ scan shows PE, Anticoagulation started and ready for discharge)
Result of study requires further treatment, workup or consultation
Deterioration in clinical course
