To be placed in the CDU, a patient must have a straightforward diagnosis that has been established in the main Emergency Department. These patients must require further management or decisions prior to an expected discharge home. This process, in the best judgement of the treating clinicians, should be likely to be completed in under 24 hours (goal of 18 hour average). Patients must be ambulatory (or at their baseline mobility), have a safe discharge destination and meet specific inclusion criteria for one of the established pathways.
Patients are not appropriate for CDU if they do not fit into an established protocol. In addition, patients with any of the following conditions are excluded from the CDU:
Acute decompensated mental health conditions
Altered mental status
Require titratable drips
Lactate > 2.5 IF sepsis/infection or tissue hypoxia is suspected
Need hemodialysis or peritoneal dialysis during their anticipated stay. As of 11/01/2024 Patients requiring Hemodialysis while in CDU can now stay in CDU
Need a sitter
Pregnant beyond 20 weeks
